If you’d want to do it manually, download the update from Plex and upload it to your NAS for installation. Should you be running the software on the best NAS for Plex, all you need to do is run the update process using the enclosure’s web UI. I’ve disabled all automatic library updates as I prefer to update my libraries manually. Installing the latest version of Plex Media Server couldn’t be easier. Just fire up a terminal session, change directory to your the mount point of your media files, and touch the directory to update the folder time stamp.

I gather you can try this same procedure on a Mac OS X system as it has a touch command via CLI. I’ve tried this numerous times and it’s been working consistently. Select movies as the library type in the popup box that appears, then click Next. Select Add Library from the drop-down menu. After that, you’ll need to add a media library. For some reason, this notifies PMS that new files have been deposited and PMS updates the library accordingly. Enter your Plex server name on the following page, leave the Allow me to access my media outside my home box checked, and click Next. In the UI, go under AUTHORIZED DEVICES and delete the 'old' device. Right-click the service and select the Stop option from the context menu.
In the Services list, scroll down until your see the Plex Update Service service. Re-enable plex, but when doing the setup, give your plex server a new name. Right-click the Services app and select the Run as administrator option. Eventually, there will be a timeout message.
I probably did it about once before finding it to be too annoying, so I thought I'd automate it.

In the parent directory, I simply run the touch command on it to update the time stamp. Right click on plex media server and choose 'delete'. If you run Plex on an Ubuntu server, then you need to install updates manually and that seems to involve going to the Plex website, searching for updates, downloading them and then figuring out how to install them.
This is where I started having an issue where PMS stopped updating the libraries.Īfter some experimentation, what worked was updating the time stamp on the directory where the new media files were added. I recently put together an unRAID system, moved the media to it, and then exported it out as samba shares. With this configuration, I did not experience any problems adding new media. I’m running PMS on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS which originally had all the media files on the internal hard disks on the server. I, too, have had issues with PMS not updating the library when new files are added to the directories.
